Spend Your Holidays in Menorca
The beautiful island of Menorca is the second largest island of the Balearic
Islands off the south-east coast of Spain.
Public Holidays in Menorca include three unique events:
- Processo dels Tres Tocs is celebrated on January 17 in the lovely, historic
city of Ciutadella and celebrates the 1278 victory of a local Minorca king
against invaders of the island.
- The Feast of St Jordi is celebrated on April 23 and recognizes a patron
saint for many of the towns on the Balearic Islands.
- Dia de Virgen de Carmen is celebrated June 15-16 and recognizes the patron
saint of sailors and fishermen.
Aside from world-wide and local celebrated holidays, Menorca is a beach-lover's
paradise. Despite being the second largest island of the Balearic Islands, Menorca
has more beaches than Majorca, the largest island. In fact, more than 100 beaches
line the shorelines of Minorca.
Menorca takes pride in being a family holiday spot. With many family-friendly
resorts to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect combination of fun and
relaxation for your family's holidays needs.
A Few Points of Interest in Menorca
Family Getaways
Among Menorca's more than 100 beaches, are many resorts and villas that your
family is sure to love. Some of the most developed beaches on the southern side
of the island have gently sloping sands and shallow waters, making them perfect
Menorca holidays destinations for families with small children.
Along the northern side of the island, you'll find many smaller bays and fall
in love with Menorca's majestic, natural beauty.
Wide Variety of Sporting Activities
Sporting activities are plentiful in Menorca's many resorts and communities.
Minorca has many lovely waterways, bays and marinas. Whether your preference
includes Scuba diving, yachting, sailing or other water sports, you'll find
something fun to do on a daily basis in Menorca. Many villa or resort holiday
packages available include boat tours, allowing you to safely explore and enjoy
your time on - or off - the island during your Menorca holidays.
Many resorts and communities offer golf, tennis, basketball and other sports.
Ranches on the island offer horseback riding on the beaches and trails that
zigzag across the island.
Shop in Style
In order to really enjoy your holidays in Menorca, you can't overlook the island's
small local markets. Menorcans pride themselves in the ability to make rare
jewelry, pottery and amazingly tasteful cheeses. While exploring the island,
be sure to visit the famous 18th-century Xoriguer Gin Distillery and watch its
copper stills in action. The distillery creates over 100 different types of
gin and offers taste samples of many!
Explorer's Paradise
In addition to the boating tours and horseback rides, Menorca has a wide variety
of natural caves. Some caves are just off the beaches, so they offer a cool,
refreshing place to relax after sunbathing or basking in the Mediterranean sea.
History buffs will love strolling through proof of Menorca's rich, colorful
past. Various monuments and Bronze Age stone towers, Megalithic ruins, remains
of Neolithic towns and other prehistoric remains are in great abundance on the
island.
Whether you plan to travel to Minorca with a well-known holiday company like
Thomas Cook or Thomson holidays, or just on a holiday trip of your own, Menorca
has it all.
